To find out more about the ISA and arborist certification read
their consumer brochures available here.
The National Arborist Association,
a trade association of commercial tree care firms, also has information
on arborist certification as well as general information for consumers.
Why an Arborist?
When hiring a company to do work of any sort the consumer should be sure
that this firm will uphold certain standards. When you have your car worked
on, for example, you make sure the work is done by an A.S.E. certified
mechanic. In the field of treecare, this standard is defined by the International
Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and certification guarantees that an arborist
is studied in the principles and practices of modern arbor science. To
get certification a prospective arborist needs to pass a rigorous certification
exam.
The certification exam is administered by the ISA which is a non-profit,
self-regulating organization dedicated to the care and preservation of
trees. Before a person can take the exam he or she must have at least
three years of experience in the field. The exam is comprehensive and
thoroughly tests the applicants understanding of the principles
of conscientious tree care. Certification lasts for three years and all
Certified Arborists must maintain their certification by attaining credits
throughout this three year period. Credits are accrued by attending workshops
and classes sponsored by the ISA in the interest of promoting knowledge
and understanding of developments in the field. The renewal process is
a good guarantee that a Certified Arborist is kept up to date.
